ODESSA - Tense moments when a child was abducted in South Odessa on Tuesday afternoon and the brother of the accused kidnapper is speaking out to NewsWest 9. The six year old girl was taken from a car while her mother was inside of a supermarket. Police were able to find the her and arrest the young man she was with.
"I've been shaken up crying and stuff and I don't know how to take it. I don't know what to do. I tried to help him and stuff and he's done nothing but stole from me, disrespect me and stuff," Ramon Ortega, said.
Ortega can't make any sense of what happened Tuesday afternoon when he heard that his 17-year-old brother was arrested for kidnapping.
"I had never expected this to happen," Ortega said.
He and his brother live with their grandparents in Odessa. Ortega says his brother, Israel, dabbles in the drug trade.
"I had given him a real hard talk this (Tuesday) morning, about doing all of that stuff," Ortega said.
According to Ortega, the last time he saw his brother was around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. His brother asked for some money and his birth certificate.
At 3:47 p.m., police got the call about a kidnapping. Police said a mother left her three children in a vehicle including a six year old, three year old, and a baby, while she went inside of the La Tienda on West Clements. Police said Israel got the six-year-old girl to open the car door. He then grabbed her by the throat and forced her out.
Police searched the area, but they didn't have to look too far. Officers found Ortega and the little girl walking down a nearby street. Ortega was arrested for kidnapping. The little girl was OK except for a few bruises around her neck.
His brother says they didn't know the mother nor her children. He says he tried to help his only brother out and thinks this incident may be a cry for help.
"The last thing I had told him before I seen him was you know, only you can help yourself to clean yourself up and I guess he didn't take it lightly and stuff and I guess that's why he kidnapped that kid or something," Ortega said.
Ortega also wanted to send a message out to his brother.
