CARLSBAD, N.M. – Crime scene tape was still blocking a back portion of a Motel 6 in Carlsbad on Monday evening.
New Mexico State Police say the Pecos Valley Task Force was executing an arrest warrant around noon when a confrontation escalated to gunfire.
"I could just hear some shots, like nine of them," Ivan Leyva, who recalled the gunshots, said.
"All I heard was rapid gunfire," Samantha Swisher, who also heard the gunshots, said.
According to authorities the suspect who was shot later died from his injuries.
Blood now stains the motel's parking lot and shattered glass can still
Be seen from where the incident happened.
Swisher says she is frightened by situations like this one, happening just a few feet away from where children play outside.
"There are a lot of kids that live around here and I see them playing out here all the time and it would worry me to know they are in danger," Swisher said.
New Mexico State Police have not released the name of the suspect nor have they said why he was wanted but they did say that the investigation is ongoing.
