Amarillo community celebrates Vietnamese New Year

Posted:

January first may have already passed, but hundreds of people in Amarillo gathered Sunday to celebrate the start of another new year.

Saturday was the Vietnamese New Year Celebration. Operating on a 12 year cycle, this year marks the Year of the Snake. The Vietnamese community, Mayor Paul Harpole, veterans and others in our community came out to enjoy and respect the celebration which included the traditional Dragon Dance, singing and many other cultural performances.

"While the Lions are dancing inside they lit the firecrackers so once again drive away the evil spirits," said Kevin Liu, a sponsor for the event. "And so every little thing that we do goes back a long time and it has a lot of tradition with it."

Organizers say the celebration of the Vietnamese New Year is one of the biggest events in their culture every year.
