Fugitive pursuit turns fatal

Amarillo, TX - A police pursuit turned into a fatal accident on Interstate 40 this morning.

A state trooper was traveling west on I-40 when he noticed a vehicle traveling in the left lane without passing heading east.

He then was turning around to stop the vehicle and clocked it going 93 miles per hour.

The vehicle failed to stop for the trooper and back-up in Oldham County was called in.

According to state troopers they then discovered the vehicle was stolen out of Illinois and the suspect was wanted for attempted murder.

A spike strip was thrown down to stop the vehicle, but when the driver swerved to miss it, he traveled across the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a semi-truck.

The driver was pronounced dead on the scene. The two occupants of the semi-truck were unharmed.

One however was taken to the hospital with an apparent broken leg.

All traffic was routed off of the interstate in both directions until the debris was cleared.
