Recap of 2012 with some top stories

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - 2012 has certainly been an interesting year, full of firsts in our area.

From erratic behavior by an airplane captain, a salmonella outbreak, all the way to pink slime and a moth invasion.

2012 has definitely been an eventful year.

In march of this year, Beef Products International announced their use of lean finely textured beef, commonly known as pink slime.

Which gained national attention, and they claim, also caused them to lose customers.

The product had been criticized by millions nationwide as being unsafe.

BPI announced production was brought to a halt at three of their plants, including one in Amarillo.

Just days later a plane on route to Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Amarillo because of the jet blue captains alleged "weird" behavior.

Passengers said he was trying to break into the cockpit, resulting in flight attendants coming over the speaker asking for help to restrain him.

In April, the area experienced what some called a "moth invasion."

To blame - was 2012's warm winter with light snowfall and relatively warm temperatures.

The moths found their way into many area residents homes and vehicles, causing some to be extremely annoyed.

In September, contaminated peanut butter was linked to the Sunland plant facility in Portales.

In the end, 29 cases of salmonella in 18 states were reported to the centers for disease control linked to their products.

Sunland had to take several of their products off the market, resulting in job loses.
