Liquor stores gear up for big business on New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

As people across the nation and in Amarillo prepare to ring in the new year, liquor stores around Amarillo are preparing for an influx in business.

Charlie Leard, owner of M&R Liquor in Amarillo says New Year's Eve is one of their busiest days of the year, if not the busiest. According to state law, liquor stores are not allowed to open on Sundays, so Leard says they'll probably see more folks waiting until the last minute on Monday to buy their alcohol. A trend he says is common year to year.

"Seems like more and more people are doing things at home, house parties so they come to the store, get their stuff and go home and that's where their party is, that's where they stay," said Leard. "That's what we recommend for a lot of people, a designated driver. So many people die on the roadways this time of year that we hope everybody uses a designated driver if they can."

Because the weather could be bad this coming Monday, Leard also expected a rush of business Saturday night as people plan ahead to avoid going out in the weather.
