Texas Department of Transportation Press Release:
MIDLAND — The damaged overpass that takes West Loop 250 over Interstate 20 on the west side of Midland will be closed for inspection for several hours on the morning of Friday, Dec. 28, 2012.
In order for the inspection to be done safely, eastbound Interstate 20 will be closed during the inspection, and traffic will be diverted to the south frontage road.
In addition, southbound Loop 250 will be closed off at the north Interstate 20 frontage road during the inspection. Loop 250 traffic will have to go east or west on the north frontage road.
Also, South County Road 1270 will not be allowed access to the south Interstate 20 service road during the time of the inspection. This is being done to improve Interstate 20 traffic flow on the south frontage road.
After the inspection is complete, the outside lane of southbound Loop 250 will remain closed and will have a weight limit of 10,000 pounds. That means most commercial vehicles will not be permitted to go across the overpass.
The bottom of the overpass was severely damaged Dec. 21 by a load that was too tall.
Motorists are asked to find alternate routes and avoid the area during the inspection time if at all possible. We expect work to be completed after lunch.
Midland police will help with traffic control, and Department of Public Safety troopers will be in the area to enforce traffic laws.
