MIDLAND - A scary situation for some elementary students in Midland on Friday.
Lamar Elementary was put on lockdown after a man who was doing supervised community service escaped.
We're told 20-year-old Derrick Landers ran off from deputies while doing work at Kingsway Mall off Illinois and Midkiff.
While they were searching for him, the school was put on lockdown as a precaution.
The Midland County Sheriff's Office told NewsWest 9, Landers was not an inmate and not considered at violent offender.
We're told he sent officers on a wild goose chase calling in and saying he was in Odessa and wanted to turn himself in.
He was actually found at the Hastings in Midland.
