MIDLAND - A scary situation for some elementary students in Midland on Friday.

Lamar Elementary was put on lockdown after a man who was doing supervised community service escaped.

We're told 20-year-old Derrick Landers ran off from deputies while doing work at Kingsway Mall off Illinois and Midkiff.

While they were searching for him, the school was put on lockdown as a precaution.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office told NewsWest 9, Landers was not an inmate and not considered at violent offender.

We're told he sent officers on a wild goose chase calling in and saying he was in Odessa and wanted to turn himself in.

He was actually found at the Hastings in Midland.
