MIDLAND - A big step in the recovery of a young Midland bullfighter who was kicked in the head by a bull just about a month ago.

Cody Hollums is now responding to commands and is breathing on his own.

His family tells NewsWest 9, he has spent this week gradually waking up from his coma and will be moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and into his own room.

Four weeks ago, Hollums jumped into an arena in Lufkin to protect a bull rider.

The bull swung around knocking Hollums to the ground and then kicked him in the head.

Cody is recovering in a Tyler hospital.
