Encouraging news for a Midland bull fighter who has been in a coma.

We're told Cody Hollums opened his eyes for the first time in 17 days.

The family says although he's not responding, he is beginning to slowly open and close his eyes as his doctors decrease his medication.

They report Cody opened his eyes several times for his dad, Eddy.

The family says he still has a long road ahead but this is good news.

Cody was hurt on October sixth when he stepped in to protect a rider from a bull in Lufkin, Texas.

He was knocked to the ground and kicked in the head.

His doctors put him in a medically induced coma last week to help his brain recover.
