Former Big Spring Mayor Russ McEwen Passes Away

BIG SPRING - Former Big Spring Mayor Russ McEwen passed away early Sunday morning. According to KBYG News, he died of natural causes.  

McEwen served as a city council representative in the 1980's. He then returned to city council in the late 90's to finish out the term of Mayor Tim Blackshear. He was then elected into his full first full term as Big Spring Mayor where he served until 2010.

McEwen is survived by his wife Laura, three children, and numerous grandchildren.

Former City Councilwoman Gloria McDonald, who served with Russ McEwen, told KBYG News,  "Russ McEwen was one of the most positive thinkers and leaders. He believed in fairness to all and was professional, thoughtful and listened. Everything he did, in or out of office, was to better our community."

    A shooting just after 3 p.m. Saturday near 3rd Street and Detroit Avenue has left one person in the hospital at University Medical Center.
