MIDLAND - A Midland mechanic in hot water after he sold customers inspection stickers for their cars.

The problem is he's accused of charging five times the amount he should have and not even doing the inspection.

Authorities say 50-year-old Erbay Zarate was charging $70 for an inspection sticker that shouldn't cost more than $15.

Zarate was arrested on Tuesday and charged with tampering with a governmental record.

State Troopers did a covert operation and went up to Zarate's business, E&R Automotive.

When the officer went up there, Zarate once again charged an arm and a leg and did not properly inspect the car.

Zarate has since bonded out of jail.
