ODESSA- The number of accidents in our area is alarming, we've heard from local law enforcement about the importance of buckling up but now we're hearing from a man who was injured in a bad rollover crash near Carlsbad. He's speaking only to NewsWest 9 about the accident and how a seatbelt saved his life.
Joe Lujan is counting his blessings after being in a horrific rollover crash last month. He says if he wasn't wearing his seatbelt, he wouldn't be here to tell his story.
"It was an experience my first, hopefully my last," Lujan said.
He's is not only thankful for his life but for wearing his seatbelt back on August fourth. Early that morning, he and his two other co-workers were driving to their oil rig between Carlsbad and Hobbs when one of the tires blew out and they lost control.
"Praying everything, I could hear really bad noises, glass shattering," Lujan said.
The truck had all the glass broken, the hood bent up and the bed of the truck smashed in. All three were rushed to the hospital and treated for their injuries.
"I couldn't move, I couldn't move for that whole morning. I started working until the next day," Lujan said.
He says he fractured two vertebrae on his spinal cord, his neck and right leg were also injured. The others also received injuries.
If they weren't wearing their seatbelt, the outcome would have been very different.
"This saved my life. I just want to tell people you know, I'm one of those victims. Wear your seatbelt, I survived it and it does make a difference," Lujan said.
Lujan expects to be back to work on the oilfields within the next couple of weeks.
