Staff Report
NewsWest 9

A Midland Lee graduate has earned the spot as Texas' top education official.

Governor Rick Perry chose Michael Williams as the new State Education Commissioner.

Robert Scott formerly held the position but stepped down in July.

Scott made headlines after saying standardized testing had become a perversion of its original intent.

Williams is a former Railroad Commission Chairman and has served as Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights.

He's also the son of public school teachers.
