A new report released says 250 people a month were killed in traffic accidents across the state last year.

Now the Texas Department of Transportation plans to take a new route to raising awareness for the problem.

Starting on Monday, TXDOT will display the year-to-date number of traffic deaths in Texas on more than 700 message signs.

The messages will run for one week every month and are designed to remind drivers that driving deserves their full attention every time they get behind the wheel.

TXDOT encourages drivers to take action in creating safer roads by driving the speed limit, paying attention to the roadways, avoiding distractions, wearing their seatbelts and never drinking and driving.
