MIDLAND COUNTY - Two people are dead after a 17 car pileup on Interstate 20 on Monday evening.
DPS Troopers tell NewsWest 9, Jesus Zapata and Felix Vargas were killed in the accident.
The accident happened on Interstate 20 two miles from the Midland County line near mile marker 123 around 6:45 p.m.
According to the City of Midland, initial reports indicate that a thunderstorm triggered a dust storm to move across the Interstate causing decreased visibility.
Drivers then reduced their speed causing the deadly chain reaction crash.
A total of 17 vehicles were involved in the accident on both the east and west bound lanes of the Interstate. Five of those vehicles were tractor trailers.
Firefighters extricated two people from the vehicles.
Two other people injured in the accident were transported to the hospital with critical injuries.
No hazardous materials, other than fuel, were spilt on the roadway.
Both the east and west bound lanes of traffic are closed as officials are cleaning up the accident.
