BIG SPRING - A big fire sparked up in Big Spring on Sunday afternoon.
The blaze ignited after 1 p.m. northeast of Big Spring, not far from the Alon Refinery.
Thick smoke could be seen for miles and crews had a hard time just getting to the fire because it was burning in an area far from roads.
The fire scorched about 200 acres but the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department and city fire crews were finally able to get the flames under control.
Thunderstorms caused some problems as winds shifted several times while firefighters, road and bridge crews and even some local oil companies worked to fight the blaze.
The fire didn't damage any homes or structures but officials were concerned with the changing winds.
Firefighters were able to build fire breaks in those locations to protect them.
No injuries were reported.
A cause is under investigation.
