ODESSA - The City of Odessa is now taking the next steps to building a water desalination plant.
Council members recently voted to approve a contract with the Colorado River Municipal Water District to buy brackish water.
That water is mainly salt and minerals and it has to be treated before residents can drink it.
City officials tell NewsWest 9, they've received eight proposals from companies to build a desalination plant.
Now they begin the process of whittling it down to the final bidder, a process which officials said could take several months.
Once a single company is chosen, it will take several more months before construction can begin.
