MIDLAND- When he's not riding on an ambulance or a fire truck, firefighter-paramedic Shawn Van Meter is with his two kids.
The single dad told NewsWest 9, "They mean everything in the world to me."
Three year-old Cambree and four year-old Aiden stretched out their arms for us as wide as they could put them. That is how much they love their father.
Shawn spent his Father's Day at Midland's Central Fire Station, where he's been working for the past five years.
"It's an honor to help people out and to be there for somebody in his or her time on need. It's rewarding," he says.
Protecting the city and raising two kids is a lot of work. He shares custody with their mother, but says when they're with him, he's on his own. Life may not have worked out exactly as he had planned but he tells us he's happy and wouldn't have it any other way.
He adds, "The first time I ever saw my son, I had cheek spasms from smiling so hard. I couldn't ask for anything more."
