ODESSA - Odessa College has created a new fast track program to get students out into the workforce a lot faster. It teaches them marketable skills being sought after by West Texas businesses.

"By having this diversified training, a student who completes this program is going to come out being a well rounded, well diversified individual and employee," Dr. Floretta Bush, Executive Director of Continuing Education at Odessa College, said.

Dr. Floretta Bush is referring to a new program, the marketable skills certificate program, which incorporates more than just taking a specialization course, it tunes and fines other skills.

"The way this program works is, it's a tier program so that a student can take some very core foundational skills classes, move into some intermediate classes and then finish up by taking those specialization classes," Bush said.

She also mentioned that not everyone can take two or four years for college, that is why a fast track program like this is essential for students who want to get a career in a short period of time.

"We feel that it benefits them because we are not dealing with just the specialized skills but we are dealing with those skills that any employer in any industry is looking for in their employees," Bush said.

Those special skills are things that employers should be looking for.

"Ultimately what we would like to see happen is for the business and industry community to look at this program as a standard, in terms of the types of skills that their employees should need when they come onboard," Bush said.
