MIDLAND COUNTY - A big fire in Midland County caused quite a scare on Saturday.

The fire sparked up in a trash pit south of Interstate 20 and west of Midkiff Drive.

The fire was close to County Roads 1414 and 114.

The fire was burning in a trash pit that's apparently known for illegal dumping.

The blaze let off a lot of thick black smoke that could be seen for miles.

The fire spread to nearby mesquite trees and grass but fire crews were able to get the fire contained to the pit.

No homes were threatened.

Midland County Fire Marshal Dale Little says they think the fire may have ignited by people dumping their trash in the pit but they are still investigating.
