MIDLAND - With the oil boom is in full swing, there's been a hike in businesses starting up in the Basin.

But before you choose a business to help you with your needs, do your homework. You don't want to be scammed.

There is a great amount of business in the Basin and with business going up left and right, it can be hard to keep up with their credentials.

Trish Powell with the Better Business Bureau says our economy is thriving, which makes it a great opportunity for business to start up in the Basin.

"With the economy the way it is we are seeing an influx in new business. It's a great opportunity for the Permian Basin to go into business and we are seeing a lot of that," Powell said.

But before you decide to hire on a small business, there are a few things you should do to make sure you're not getting ripped off.

"When a consumer is looking to hire a business for something especially if they've never used the business for that particular type of project, it's very good for them to do research and to contact the Better Business Bureau," Powell said.

If a report has ever been filed against a company, anyone will be able to access that information.

"I believe that customers are getting smarter and they want to make sure they get a good deal. First of all that they're not getting scammed by a company so I do see a lot more consumers doing their research in advance of giving money. They have a lot of questions and they want to make sure they can get the right answers," Powell said.
