CARLSBAD, N.M. - The Denny's restaurant chain has launched a fundraising campaign for the children of slain Denny's waitress Rachel Rodriquez.

Rodriquez was a waitress at the Denny's in Carlsbad when she was shot and killed at the restaurant on April 5 by Christopher Joseph "CJ" Dluehosh.

Dluehosh, 22, of Tucson, Ariz., fled the scene and later shot himself.

He died on April 7.

Police believe the two did not know each other and concluded the shooting was random. Rodriquez, a single mom who left three children behind, had been living in Pecos and had only recently moved to Carlsbad.

Through May 15, all Denny's restaurants in New Mexico will be collecting donations in remembrance of Rodriguez.

The donations will go to an endowment set up at Wells Fargo to benefit her children.

Guests can also visit Wells Fargo locations nationwide to make a financial contribution to the "Rachel Rodriguez/Carillo Fund."

"We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of a beloved colleague, team member and friend," said Denny's Corp. chief executive John Miller in a news release announcing the endowment.

"Denny's established this fund in response to the outpouring of guests desiring a way to help Rachel's family. We hope our in-store collections will make it easier for the community to make a difference for this young family at the time they need it the most."
