ODESSAOne man is dead after a six hour standoff in Odessa that ended in gunfire.

Around 5:30 p.m., the suspect, 40-year-old Rene Francisco Najera, walked out of his home and shot himself on his lawn as he saw a SWAT team moving in to enter his home in the 900 block of Patton.

This all began when officers went to Najera's home to serve a warrant.

As officers approached the home to serve the warrant, officers reported hearing shots being fired inside the home. Officers backed off and set up a perimeter around the neighborhood.

Gale Pond Alamo Elementary sheltered-in-place while authorities were dealing with the situation.

The OPD SWAT Team, the Texas Department of Public Safety and ECISD Police responded to the scene. The DPS helicopter was also called in to help out.

Throughout the day on Monday, negotiators made contact with Najera to talk with him and convince him to surrender.

Najera died at the scene.
