MIDLAND - Mandatory school uniforms are now in place for several Midland schools.
11 elementary schools were pushing for the uniforms but only nine schools got them.
Those schools include: Burnet, Crockett, Dezavala, Fannin, Sam Houston, Jones, Jane Long, Milam and Rusk.
Midland school officials believe the uniform look will help even out the playing field for students who can't afford expensive and flashy clothes.
The look would vary a bit from school to school but would be generally consistent of a solid-colored polo skirt and black, khaki, or navy pants and skirts.
The school says there is research that shows it is less costly for parents to buy uniforms than to buy regular clothes.
At the same school meeting, the Midland School Board approved plans for a new head start program.
They've been working on all the paperwork to get a government grant for it.
The district could see the program kick off as early as next year.
