A Midland man is accused of sexually assaulting a young boy inside a church.

26-year-old William Velasquez is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child.

According to the police report,  Velasquez an alter server at Saint Stephens Catholic Church.

However, the Diocese told NewsWest 9 Saturday that the man only occasionally stepped in as an altar server when the help was needed. They say he is not a registered member of St. Stephens Catholic Church.

Last Friday, a six-year old boy told the children's advocacy center what happened.

He said Velasquez took him into a separate room where he pulled down the victim's pants and performed oral sex on him.

According to the affidavit, Velasquez admitted to police he did it along with touching the boy's genitals.

Bishop Michael Pfeifer issued a statement to NewsWest 9 on Friday evening saying, "I am very saddened that this has happened and will work with all to bring this investigation to a completion. I will be conferring with all involved, and hope to get more clarity about this regrettable incident. I ask that prayer for healing be offered for the child, his parents, and family, and for God's guidance for all."

Velasquez remains behind bars.
