ODESSA-A new organization aimed at helping the Hispanic population in the Basin has started up in Odessa. It's all because more Hispanic families are moving to town for jobs.

With more job openings in Odessa, more people are coming to live here. A lot of Hispanic families have moved to West Texas to find jobs in the oilfield. When these families get here, they start from scratch and a new organization in town is trying to help these families out.

This new organization is called Una Mano Amiga or a helping hand. What they're trying to do is help the Hispanic community that lives in West Texas.  The problem is that many Hispanics that are moving to here for jobs are not always fluent in English and because of the language barrier sometimes if they are presented with a tough situation they are not able to ask for help. What this organization is trying to do is help facilitate resources that these families might need in their native language.

"We do have organizations here that help. We are not trying to take that away from them but we have people that don't speak English or they are bashful or ashamed and afraid that their English is not going to be where they can understand them. Now we have a place where they can come and we can support them, we can do the English talking or we can fill out the paperwork," Jesse, a Volunteer of Una Mano Amiga, said.

So far the organization has some local doctors, local lawyers and local community leaders that are helping them out. They are either volunteering their time and their job skill or they are helping by donating money or donating their building so they can meet with the people.

The organization doesn't have an official building but they are working with a local insurance company to donate an office space to them. For more information you can contact them at 432-553-9357.
