The Midland Police Department has compiled crime statistics for the year of 2011. The following numbers refer to Part I Crimes, crimes that are most likely to be reported and are also serious in nature and/or volume.
|Murder & Manslaughter
Midland's crime rate has fallen in seven of the last eight years. The number of Part I crimes has declined each year since 2004, with the exception of 2009, when that number reached 4,360.
The largest reductions were in the categories of Forcible Rape, which was reduced by over half, with 25 fewer reported offenses than in 2010. Aggravated assault showed 134 fewer offenses for 2011. There were 178 fewer burglaries reported in 2011 which translated into a reduction of 20%. The department continued their burglary reduction strategy, implemented in June 2010, which helped to reduce reported burglaries a total of 20% by the end of 2011.
MPD attributes the decrease in crime to its partnership with the community and the hard work done by officers and detectives. MPD also uses crime data and statistics to identify possible crime trends or spikes in crimes in a specific part of the city.
