How would you like to find out you've been under-billed by your energy company for three years?
That's the rough reality for some businesses in Southeastern New Mexico.
Xcel energy says they under-billed 28 commercial accounts across the state.
A majority of those accounts are in Eddy and Lea Counties that includes Carlsbad, Jal, Eunice, and Hobbs.
Now the company wants the money they're owed.
Xcel spokesman Wes Reeves tells NewsWest 9 that the meters were set incorrectly.
So for the past two years, the companies weren't billed for the actual energy they used.
After discovering the error, the company petitioned the Public Regulation Commission, asking it to allow Xcel to seek back payments.
Reeves also said they over billed some accounts and have given rebates.
The issue was recently brought up by Xcel to eddy county commissioners.
Meanwhile, County Commissioner Jack Volpato says back power bills could be crippling for small businesses in Eddy County.
