BIG SPRING - In an effort to possibly save costs and reduce redundancies in services, Howard College and Howard County are looking at the possibility of a joint library.
This is only something they are exploring at this time, say officials on both sides, and any such effort would not affect employment at either facility, should they join forces.
A special meeting of Howard County Commissioners has been posted as they have been invited to attend the regular meeting of Howard College Trustees Tuesday in the Tumbleweed Room at 1pm.
The group will hear a presentation from College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks and a discussion will follow. It is one item on the college trustees full agenda.
You may recall that Howard College was the recent recipient of a $250,000 grant from the Maria Hogue estate to make renovations to the college library. So local officials from both the county and college say they are taking this opportunity to explore the possibility of joining the two libraries.
If the joint library facility were to actually occur, we are told it would be established at the Howard College campus. The county library is currently on Scurry. College president Dr. Cheryl Sparks says that other funds would become necessary in addition to the grant to make more space available at the college site, so that's something else that would need to be looked into.
Dr. Sparks emphasizes that a joint facility is only a topic to explore at this time, and that the discussion could very well lead to a conclusion a joint library facility isn't practical.
