Amarillo, Texas - Uninsured women can now get free breast cancer screenings, thanks to a new program in the Panhandle.

The program is called ABC4WT, Short for access to breast Care for West Texas. The state gave them a $1.6 million grant so they can give uninsured women free mammograms.

Many times, these women put the screening off, sometimes delaying it indefinitely because it costs several hundred dollars, and they need to spend that money to feed their families, but that could be a deadly decision.

Seven women's lives have already been saved by the program, in some cases, women who never would've known they had breast cancer.

Mammograms, though, are just the beginning. Texas Oncology's Jennifer Campos says, "The mammogram, the biopsy, the ultrasound and the pathology. Once a cancer is detected the grant does no cover that but then we become resourceful and use what we can to provide a service to treat the cancer."

There's no income verification or mountains of paperwork needed to apply for the free test. As long as you're over 40 and do not have insurance, you'll qualify. All you need to do is call at 356-4659.
