Small Earthquakes Rattle West Texas

SNYDER - An earthquake rattled West Texans early Sunday morning. That quake was followed by at least two lesser aftershocks hours later.

According to the US Geological Survey it was a 4.4 magnitude quake. The earthquake originated 11 miles northeast of Snyder at 7:27 a.m. Sunday.

Residents all over the Permian Basin including Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, Andrews and Snyder reported feeling the quake to NewsWest9.

The Scurry County Sheriff's Office tells NewsWest9 no damage was reported from the quake.

Two more quakes were reported Sunday afternoon by the USGS. One was at 1:36 p.m. and was a 2.5. The other was at 3:30 and was a 2.7. The two smaller quakes were in the same general area as the first one Sunday morning.

Small earthquakes do happen in the Snyder area from time to time. The NewsWest9 archive shows the last couple of earthquakes were around 3.0 in magnitude.
