ANDREWS - The family of the Andrews man whose body was found last week is speaking out.

Officials tell NewsWest 9, they believe the victim was killed in a hit and run accident.

They identified the body as 22-year-old Gerardo Chacon. NewsWest 9 spoke with a family member via telephone on Sunday afternoon. The family is in New Mexico right now planning his funeral and they said they just want closure.

"It's just really terrible you know," Lizbeth Morales said. "It's just a shock to us. We're still like how? Why?"

Those are the questions still unanswered for Morales and her family.

Her cousin, Gerardo Chacon, was found dead just south of Andrews on Highway 385 early Thursday morning.

DPS and Texas Rangers believe it was a hit and run.

Morales said her family doesn't know why Chacon suddenly left the night before.

"I just don't know if maybe he had too much going on. I don't know," she said. "He took off in the nighttime and we figured he'd come back home."

But Chacon never made it back. Morales called several hospitals and police stations with no luck. Then they heard about the unidentified body found just south of town.

"Shock, big shock," Morales said. "We were just like no way and we kind of knew then, you know."

Morales said officials told the family it might've been a large company truck that hit Chacon.

"We don't know if he was alive for 10 minutes or 20 minutes or if he instantly died," she said.

Now the family is hoping whoever's responsible will come forward.

"I don't know why they didn't help him," Morales said. "I just don't understand why they just left."

Morales said they're trying to cover funeral expenses by selling food and holding car washes.

Now as the family deals with their loss, they're left with the memories of their loved one who will truly be missed.

"He was just the greatest guy," Morales said. "His smile will never be forgotten."

Chacon's body is being taken to Anthony, New Mexico where he will be laid to rest next to his mother on Tuesday.
