SNYDER - Campbell Fest is well underway in Snyder and the family of Corporal Darrell Campbell is speaking out.

It's been just over a month since Kaylee Campbell's dad was shot but she and her family remember it like it was yesterday.

"At first I didn't know where he was shot so I really didn't know anything," Kaylee said. "It was just crazy because it doesn't feel like anything like that could happen to you but it did."

Back in July, Corporal Darrell Campbell with the Snyder Police Department was shot in the head while responding to a call.

His partner, Officer Lee Ortiz, shot and killed the suspect.

"The first few days were terrible," Tommy Campbell, Corporal Campbell's father, said. "I was just in total awe, it couldn't be my son. They were mistaken."

After getting over the initial shock, Tommy said they were finally able to see light at the end of the tunnel.

"He made it through surgery and made it through the third day and it's been uphill ever since," Tommy said.

Officer Campbell was recently released from the hospital and family members said his recovery is going well.

"He's doing really good," Kaylee said. "He's been talking and stuff."

"I said 'Hello son' and he looked up at me and said 'Hello dad' and I hadn't heard that in a long time, it was wonderful," Tommy said.

The family said the community coming together means more to them than most people will ever know.

"Family being here and all his supporters, everybody's been just wonderful," Tommy said. "I couldn't ask for anything better for him. I just can't thank everybody enough."

"Thank you for praying it truly helped out a lot," Kaylee said.
