ODESSA - Troopers say a careless driver in Odessa rear ended a pickup carrying a family of four on Friday morning. Now a young girl and her mother are in the hospital recovering.
The family of four was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 when a Nissan Maxima traveling behind them, rear ended their pickup, causing them to side skid.
Trooper Jeffrey Harckey says the vehicles weren't speeding at the time of accident but he suspects the driver of the Nissan may have dozed off.
11-year-old Yamileth Nunez was riding in the backseat of the pickup and wasn't wearing her seatbelt.
The child was ejected into the median, face down.
She's been transferred to Lubbock Children's Hospital and is in critical condition.
Her mother, Livia Nunez, injured her arm and is in stable condition at Midland Memorial Hospital.
The father and son were treated and released.
The driver of the Nissan didn't sustain any injuries.
No citations have been issued so far.
