BIG SPRING - Howard County commissioners had some good news for tax payers this week. The county property tax rate is going down 9 cents per $100 value.

Commissioners voted to go with the "effective" rate, which maintains revenues as they are in the current county budget. The tax rate right now is just over 52 cents. The new rate in the coming fiscal year will be just over 43 cents for Howard County property owners.

The reason the county is able to drop down 9 cents is because of a big increase in mineral values: $2.5 billion in Howard County.

The next item county commissioners will address is the county budget, with public hearings scheduled in the near future.
