PECOS - A shake-up in the city of Pecos. On Wednesday night, the City Council hired a new city manager but now some serious questions are being raised about his past.

Jim Aguilera was selected to become the new City Manager in Pecos.

As it turns out, Aguilera was arrested on bribery charges 12 years ago, while he was working for the city of Cathedral City, California.

Pecos Mayor Venetta Seals learned of his arrest from the Pecos Enterprise.

Seals tells NewsWest 9, Aguilera was originally charged with facilitating a bribe, but it was downgraded to a misdemeanor and later expunged from his record.

A background check was done on Aguilera for the State of Texas but a nationwide check wouldn't have turned up the arrest, since it was expunged.

Aguilera has six years of city manager experience.
He worked for the towns of Sunland Park and Truth or Consequences in New Mexico before coming to Pecos.

Seals says the City Council will now discuss whether to move forward with Aguilera or to hire someone else.

They'll either discuss the issue during a regular meeting or schedule a special one.

We'll let you know what happens.
