MIDLAND - Midland Police are investigating an early morning accident along Interstate 20 that sent two men to the hospital.
Police say Jorge Utajara, 27, was headed west on the north service road of I-20 at Fairgrounds, they tried to pass a semi-truck. The car slammed into the semi, and was partially underneath the truck. Utajara was partially ejected from his vehicle. His passenger, Marcos Yanez, 37, was pinned in the car for a time, as crews used the Jaws of Life to free him.
Initially, crews believed Yanez had died from his injuries, but both men were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Police say Utajara is being tested to see if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Meantime, crews are working to clean up the mess left behind from the wreck. The north service road between east Highway 158 and Fairgrounds remains closed down. Also, Fairgrounds from east Highway 158 to I-20 is also shut down.
