ODESSA - McKinney Park in Odessa is kicking off the soap box derby tournament for the first time in the Permian Basin.
The event is something of a tradition and is usually held in Sweetwater.
This year the fun starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning at McKinney Park and will go on until about 3:30 p.m.
The derby is open to all families who want to participate.
The only rule is the kids participate in building the race car.
"It's a great way to have the family come together and at the same time I really would like to invite all the fathers and sons, mothers and sons and daughters to come out there and participate because if it does very well for us we want to see if we can do another one in the fall and if it does, we're going to continue this tradition and move forward with it," State Farm Agent, Filiberto Gonzales, said.
