Howard County Commissioners Approve Public Defender Contract

Staff Report

HOWARD COUNTY - Capital murder cases can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

For rural communities like Howard County, they have trouble picking up the tab for these cases.

So they've invested in a type of insurance program that would help pay for the cost should a capital murder case come to town.

It's called the Public Defender Contract and County Commissioners approved the renewal.

The cost for the contract this year is just over $13,000.

The area hasn't seen a big murder case in over 10 years but officials want to be prepared.
