MIDLAND - Blood is essential for everyone especially during a car accident or surgery. United Blood Services is always trying to get donors to bring blood in to help save those lives. But this summer, they're trying a new approach to bring in donors. They are offering incentives in exchange for your blood.

"We're going to be having a lot of promotions to help people come in and maintain a good blood supply," Melissa Aguirre with United Blood Services, said.

United Blood Services will be offering first time incentives in an effort to bring blood into their bank. The reason being, that during the summer, they always have a shortage.

"During the summer people take vacations, kids are out of school, so many times, they just don't come in and donate," Aguirre said.

That's why they wanted to change things up a bit.

"We're trying to get them to come back, to get them to keep coming back, to help us with our blood supply," Aguirre said.

And local organizations seem to be jumping on board to help them with the gifts.

"A lot of the people in the different organizations are also contributing back to the donors to help them help improve our blood supply here in the Permian Basin," Aguirre said.

All you need to give blood is 30-40 minutes and an ID and you could be leaving with gift baskets or gift certificates. Most importantly, you could be saving a life.

"We want to be ready for our community, if someone didn't have that blood, we wouldn't have it and then that person wouldn't live. The blood supply we use is what helps to help us save lives," Aguirre said.
