BIG SPRING - Just like every other school district in Texas, the Big Spring ISD Is under the state funding gun as Austin tries to put together a balanced state budget with billions in revenue shortfalls, and very real threats to cut funding in every area, including public education.

The Big Spring School Board Thursday had one outstanding action item on their agenda, and that was employment contracts for the next year. The good news is that after approving the contracts the board was able to offer renewals to all of the existing professional positions currently in place. That is due to the fact that the school district recently had 17 positions vacated by attrition, either by resignations or retirements.

Of course, the Texas Legislature has yet to approve a new budget, but Big Spring school officials hope their being proactive at this time will meet or come close to a worse case scenario in state funding cuts to come.

The bad news was that the school board Thursday also agreed to a 10 percent cut across the board for district "supplies". This would include everything from transportation to technology to athletics.
