MARTIN COUNTY - A Midland County Sheriff's Deputy will not face charges for his involvement in the shooting death of a Martin County man back in January.

A Martin County grand jury cleared the deputy this past week.

54-year-old Lonny Martin was shot and killed during a police chase on Highway 176.

We're told Martin had been threatening police and when they tried to apprehend him peacefully, it ended in a standoff.

Deputies had been watching Martin for about a week before the incident.

They were trying to serve him eviction papers after the owners of the house wanted him out.

Martin was driving towards a residential area and refused to pull over when deputies tried to stop him.

That's when they opened fire and Martin crashed into a gas main.

Martin died at the scene from a gunshot wound.

Police later searched his house and found guns, ammunition, a suicide note and the clothes he wanted to be buried in.
