Missing Elderly Carlsbad Man Found Dead

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - An Eddy County man missing since Feb. 11 has been found dead near his burned car, less than two miles from his home south of Carlsbad.

County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Zuniga says sheriff's officers found 72-year-old Louis Fanning on Monday afternoon in southeastern New Mexico.

Zuniga says no foul play is suspected, but Fanning's body has been sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Authorities say the investigation found Fanning had driven off the road into high grass, where he got stuck, and the vehicle caused the grass to catch on fire.

The vehicle and surrounding area were burned, but Fanning was not.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
