ANDREWS - Crews have extinguished a grassfire that forced some evacuations in Andrews. The fire started Sunday afternoon off of Highway 115 just west of Andrews.

Fire officials say the fire almost got away from them when it jumped Highway 115. That is when they decided to evacuate some residents on the westside of town. The flames did come near some homes, but the main threat was thick smoke that blew into some Andrews neighborhoods.

Fire officials say no one refused to leave after they saw the smoke that was blowing into the city. Crews got the upper hand on the fire around 4:30 p.m. and then allowed residents to return home.

500 to 600 acres about a mile west of Andrews were charred by the flames.

Crews form Eunice and Seminole assisted units from Andrews. Fire fighters were working Sunday night to put out some hot spots in the area.
