Defense Rests in TYC Sex Abuse Case

LUBBOCK - The defense has rested in the trial of a former principal of a West Texas juvenile prison accused of sexually abusing five inmates in 2004 and 2005.

John Paul Hernandez, the former principal, finished testifying Friday afternoon following about eight and a half hours on the witness stand over two days.

He denied the young men's accusations and testified the five former inmates made up allegations of sexual abuse and may have conspired on a plan to accuse him. Hernandez was the last of eight witnesses for the defense. Prosecutors put one rebuttal witness on the stand Friday and will finish their case Monday.

Jurors were expected to begin deliberations after closing arguments. Hernandez, 45, has been charged in 11 indictments with crimes including a sexual assault charge.
