HOWARD COUNTY - Big Spring and Howard County fire fighters kept a grass fire to under 20 acres Wednesday just west of Big Spring. No structures were damaged in the fire that was fanned by southerly breezes.

The fire began on the northside of west Highway 80 at the Big Spring city limits and moved north toward I-20. The fire, which started on private property just after 11:00 am was contained in under an hour. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan says that fire departments across West Texas are on pins and needles as a bad situation has gotten worse. The recent sub-zero cold snaps killed off any living vegetation in the area, and has added to the already abundant fuel for wildfires.

Dry and windy conditions are in the forecast, and many locations have red flag warnings.
