ODESSA - A big drop in crime in Odessa.

On Thursday, the Odessa Police Department released their crime stats for last year.

Overall, crime is down 13 percent. Murder, robbery and arson all dropped significantly. The only crime that rose was aggravated assault.

Corporal Sherrie Carruth says the Police Department isn't the only one that can take credit for the overall drop in crime.

"For us to successfully do our job, it takes the community, it takes people out there supporting us, people out there helping us, giving us information.  So I contribute this decrease for a lot of people stepping up to the plate," Carruth said.

The department also implemented beats for the officers.

That allows them to get to know certain areas of the community more intimately.

Which in turn, makes people who live there, more trusting of officers.
