BIG SPRING - The much anticipated Community Health Center for the Howard County area should be opening in less than three months.

Now a part of the South Plains Health Center in Levelland, the satellite office at 1800 Gregg has a projected opening date of May 8, but city council representative Jo Ann Staulcup informed city council Monday that the organization hopes to open the health center before then, on a date to be announced.

As we previously reported, the Community Health Center here has been in the works for about three years. Teaming up with the Levelland center is expediting the local office's opening substantially, says Staulcup, who has served on the board that helped to develop the concept for Howard County.

The health center will be specifically aimed at serving uninsured and underinsured area residents with basic health care treatment and prevention. Patients will pay for services on a sliding scale, and no one will be turned away for services that the center will offer.

Jo Ann Staulcup said Monday that the establishment of the health center here could save the local hospital, Scenic Mountain Medical Center, millions of dollars per year in costs to treat uninsured patients who come through the hospital's emergency room for treatment of non-emergency medical problems like colds and the flu.
