TXDOT Crews Preparing for Possible Winter Weather

Hard to imagine that on Monday night West Texas will be in the middle of a deep freeze.

Drivers along I-20 and other highways could end up dealing with a big mess on their hands.

That's why TXDOT crews are on stand-by.

Their trucks have been loaded with de-icing agents, as well as a salt and gravel mixture, for traction.

Officials tell NewsWest 9, their main focus is bridges and overpasses.

And with the freezing temperatures sticking around all week, TXDOT crews will be busy for the next few days.

"I may get 5 people in the morning.  They may work the morning hours.  I may get them to work four hours, get them to go home, rest three hours and come back.  It's just going to be a continuous turnaround of the employees," Jesse Gutierrez, Director of Maintenance for the TXDOT Odessa District, said.

Gutierrez says even though bridges and overpasses will be treated, drivers should take precautions anyway.

Stay at home if you don't have to be out, but if you do, use service roads when you can.
